I understood indian raga rhythms the first time I heard them. Then put them into my guitar playing. They are simple when you get carried away.

I’m a percussionist and a friend sent this to me. Either I’m very unusual or I’m missing something obvious because it doesn’t seem that hard to me. Isn’t it just 3 counts of 4, then 3 of 3, then 3 of 2 then 2 sets of 3 of 1? I initially thought of doing what the drummer said and writing it out in 1/16ths but it doesn’t seem necessary. Seems a bit like the Baltic time signatures that Western musicians find so confusing but which are just “longs and shorts”. Thoughts?

you talk too much. it's very Western. it's the Western equivalent of doing things. talking instead of doing. talking about it instead of actually playing. more than 5 minutes of Western talking about how things work instead of just doing. The Western, yes, yes .. I lost track of how many times you say "in the Western world", "the Western way" ... yadda yadda yadda

It's not just the rhythm, The mixolydian b6 is called Charukesi the 26th mode in Indian karnatic music out of its 72 main modes (melakartha raagam) go figure, The ragam is usually played/sung with some ornamentations (vibratos and pitch bends) from the total 12 types. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charukesi#:~:text=Charukesi%20(pronounced%20ch%C4%81ruk%C4%93%C5%9B%E2%80%8Ci)%20is%20a,r%C4%81gam%20system%20of%20Carnatic%20music.

I agree with you on the verbal Ta Ki Ta, etc technique being a superior count method. And it's the way tabla players, (in India). become players, they must learn to 'say it before playing it", for years, before ever touching the drums.

    • @Rhythm911

I specialize in Arabian Rhythm's, But I've never learned to play Tabla, I just couldn't adapt my ' hand-eye co-ordination" to the techniques. Fortunately, with the 21st century predominance of various Grand Maestro, world beat genre, DJ/musician/producers who can morph, (with music software quantization, etc,) East Indian works into something that is much more straightforward and easier to drum to !!!

i think it would be actually easier to learn Hindustani music. you don't have to go the traditional 12/15/20 years of mastery route. you can learn the all the stuff in a few years with a teacher. mastering that in your singing or an instrument will actually take much longer. but once you know Hindustani music, you don't have to do all these strange transposing and converting, which is actually really complex and confusing (I think), whereas in its original context its much easier to learn. and then you can fuse with other styles to your hearts content.

Number 13 is a controversial topic , like you said !! I agree with you but only up to a certain point . Everything in today's music world is so flooded with all the pitch correction and quantization that you really don't have to be able to actually play your instrument or actually sing in key to have a good sounding song . Which in one aspect is really cool but it is also a totally false representation of what and who this particular "artist" is or what they are actually capable of doing in a live presentation of that song . So I say embrace the technology sparingly so as to make what is already good even better but not lie to the public with false skills .

#13... Man... I could rant a ton about this topic alone. I have used AI, not to write lyrics, but to give my lyrics something to go along with. Things like Suno. I use that just to get the ball rolling. I'm able to pump out tons of songs with out it. I can competently edit mys lyrics based on syllables, rhyme schemes, meters, motifs etc. And, it's fun and it sounds good. It's been the most growth I've had in years.

My only comment on the 'embracing technology' tip would be: Use technology as a tool, not a crutch. I'm a drummer, and I often sequence a drum track to act as a place holder. Then, I compose the majority of the piece. At some point, I go back and record 'my' drum tracks (playing live on my midi drums (I live in an apartment, and midi drums are pretty amazing now)). This gives me something better than a click-track to compose over, while still allowing me to add my 'real drummer' dynamics and feel later. When you do vocals, don't just bang out some garbage tracks and 'fix them in post' with autotune, try to get the best takes you can - then fix what you have to with autotune. Also, don't be afraid to not use autotune, or go light on it. A little imperfection can feel way more authentic... :)

Great work Jake 👍. Would love to see some Indian and Western musicians working together in such a video to get the music styles closer . That will do great to music as a whole as Indian music is ancient and so diversified...not even explored 1% by the rest of the world. Western sound clubbed with Indian music basics will create an altogether new entertainment zone. Love ❤ from India 🇮🇳.
